Henkel highlighted for sustainability success
Henkel has been awarded for its successful sustainability strategy after being ranked number one in the Household & Personal Products category by Oekom Research as the rating agency published an interim update after adjusting its criteria at the end of last year.

As such, the German firm is also among companies with the best scores worldwide with a B+ mark.

Oekom’s assessment of the social and environmental performance of a company as part of the Corporate Rating is carried out using over 100 social and environmental criteria, selected specifically for each industry.

Strategy

Henkel has also been reconfirmed as a constituent of the Ethibel Sustainability Index (ESI) Excellence Europe and the Ethibel Sustainability Index (ESI) Excellence Global since March 23, 2015.

The ESI indices universe is composed of companies included in the Russell Global Index that display the best performance in the field of Corporate Social Responsibility.

“These accomplishments recognize Henkel’s continued efforts to achieve more with less, the concept at the centre of the company’s sustainability strategy,” says a company statement.

“Henkel set to improve the relationship between the value it creates and its environmental footprint by 30% for the five years from 2011 to 2015. By the end of 2014, it had achieved significant progress, with improvements of 20% in energy efficiency, 19% in water use, 18% in waste volume and 25% in occupational safety.”

The company says it aims to improve its performance again in 2015 and is working on defining new targets for 2020.

The Schwarzkopf brand owner’s long-term goal for 2030 is to triple the value it creates for the footprint made by its operations, products and services.

Targets

The news comes after Henkel announced it had reached its first sustainability targets ahead of schedule, last month.

“Henkel’s clear Sustainability Strategy has proven highly effective, enabling us to reach four out of five interim targets one year ahead of schedule,” says Kathrin Menges, Executive Vice President Human Resources and Chair of Henkel’s Sustainability Council.
