What’s trending in beauty and personal care product packaging development? Here’s nine recent developments in luxury cosmetics packaging…

Targeted tubes for skin treatments

Skin care company Murad chose Cosmogen’s Tense tube packaging for its Targeted clinical skincare range.

The applicators are highlighted by a transparent cap and two of the products are formed in zamak, while one is in PP.

The patented packaging is available in recycled plastic (PCR), with a removable ceramic, metal or plastic applicator that can be reused on a refill, while the metal applicator can be textured and personalised.

Fun-filled bathtime packaging

Lithuania-based design agency Andstudio has created specialist packaging for a kids’ personal care range for the brand Uoga Uoga.

The playful yet practical design brings life to soap, shampoo, and lotion bottles with expressive faces. The design encourages kids to play with and decorate the bottles with included reusable stickers.

"This refresh of the Uoga Uoga Kids line stays true to the Uoga Uoga brand philosophy, keeping everything organic and natural. But this design has the added aim of helping make bath time enjoyable," shared Augustinas Paukste, co-founder and partner of andstudio.

"Uoga Uoga Kids directly addresses a common parental struggle, while at the same time reinforcing the Uoga Uoga brand's role as a helpful and caring part of family routines. Introducing a line specifically for kids helps Uoga Uoga reach a broader audience, connecting with customers early in life and making a lasting impression," explained Paukste.

The work has recently won the "Best of Category" award at the international packaging awards, the 2024 Dieline Awards in the ‘Health, Beauty, & Personal Care’ category.

Squeezy CBD

Cosmogen and Boiron worked together to create Squeeze’n’roll CBD by Boiron – a roll-on gel to soothe and relax muscles.

The removable, stainless-steel roller makes it easy to self-massage. The applicator has a patented on/off rotary closure that can be opened to dispense and apply the formula and turned off to wash the applicator.

The range is offered in micro, mini, normal, and maxi formats and has been designed with separable elements for sorting and recycling, including the reusable applicator on a new tube. It can be made from recycled plastic.

Customisable dip-in packs

Quadpack has created a range of dip-in packs with matching applicators. The collection already has over 40 applicators, matched with a wide range of bottles and the option to customise existing applicators or develop new ones.

The mix-and-match system for dip-in solutions has two steps: choose the bottle and match the applicator.

According to the packaging company’s category specialist Mateia Crippa, the classic flocked applicators are evolving. “Thanks to our mix-and-match strategy, we are able to support new habits with a reduced investment for the brand,” explained Crippa.

For its first-ever product, a lipgloss called Gloss Pailleté Si Si La Paillette’s, Quadpack has customised its Gala dip-in pack with ‘The Elegant applicator'.

French beauty brand Si Si La Paillette offers plant-based, biodegradable, cruelty-free glitter, with over 99% ingredients of natural origin.

The brand chose the 4.5ml Gala bottle for its strong silhouette, luxury look and recyclable materials. Gala is made of recyclable polyethylene terephthalate (PET) and Si Si La Paillette opted to include 50% post-consumer recycled (PCR) material in the bottle, to further reduce environmental impact.

Bio-based, marble-effect fragrance caps

FaiveleyTech has created bio-based, marble-effect fragrance caps in different shades using Sulapac Luxe Flex – a functional biobased material designed to replace technical plastics in beauty packaging.

The pattern is repeatable, thanks to the specialist manufacturing process.

“Sulapac is the first biobased material that meets the functional, aesthetic and quality requirements set by us and our beauty customers,” explained Béryl Tomaschett, sales director at FaiveleyTech Orgelet.

“Having demonstrated that we can achieve this exquisite marble effect with very thick walls, opens even more opportunities for brands to use Sulapac instead of conventional plastic,” she adds.

Decorative and 100%-PP solid perfume sticks

Albéa Cosmetics & Fragrance has collaborated with Christian Dior on its new Miss Dior Mini Miss solid perfumes.

The scents Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet and Miss Dior Eau de Parfum have been reinvented for the first time as solid perfumes in a pink translucent stick.

The packaging is 100%-PP with the body of the cap and the mechanism-holder decorated by galvanisation. A recyclable sintered-steel ballast adds weight and gives a sensory appeal.

The case is hand-woven by handweaving specialist Oriol & Fontanel in a houndstooth jacquard pattern in the Miss Dior colours.

Honey bee-inspired packaging

For its new Alvari Collection, UK-based packaging company Hunter Luxury has drawn inspiration from honey bees. The new range is designed to transform fragrance sample packaging into a sensory experience through 3D pop-up features, novel structural designs, and premium finishing techniques.

The bee theme was inspired by several members of the Hunter Luxury team who are avid beekeepers. “When you think of bees, thoughts of verdant summer meadows and colourful flower gardens are never far behind,” said Hunter Luxury’s head of beauty Pippa Bell.

“This theme gave our design team the freedom to demonstrate our full range of capabilities, from complex structural designs to elaborate finishing and bespoke detailing.”

The range works with a variety of techniques that can be used to turn ordinary sampler packaging into an extraordinary experience.

It includes 3D pop-up representations of the full fragrance bottle, sliding drawer packs, and apertures that frame the fragrance bottle with wildflowers. Each of these details can be customised with different materials, colours, and decorative elements.

Luxury cap with a PP insert

TNT Group partnered with Cartier for Les Bases a Parfumer for the design and manufacture of the cap for the bottle of L’Huile Pure.

The cap features a gold-galvanised zamak shell, assembled with a PP insert by crimping.

The cap has undergone an intricate semi-automatic and manual production and finishing process for a silky touch and colour that’s consistent with the entire packaging line.

Reduced-plastic, lightweight tube

Albéa Tubes has worked with French brand SVR to create a new cleanser for its Topialyse range.

The pack has a single-component open-and-close system EcoFusion Top with a tube integrating 41% of recycled content, as well as Thin Wall technology, which significantly reduces the weight of the tube.

The SVR concentrated cleanser is the first water-free dermatological cleanser specifically formulated for dry, sensitive skin for the whole family. The 100g tube represents the equivalent of 40 showers, or the use of a 400ml TOPIALYSE Cleansing Gel.

Aude Laclaire, sustainability director at Albéa Tubes shared: "The reduced plastic use and the integration of recycled material are the biggest drivers to lower environmental impact and reduce scope 3 GHG emissions in our industry.”
