In line with the growing trend for minimalistic and sustainable Scandinavian beauty products, Danish skincare brand NUORI has combined eight hero ingredients, including 'the perfect plant-derived peptide', in a one-step formula for its new face care launch, The One.

The all-natural cream, which launched in April, priced at €59, contains no synthetic preservatives, stabilisers or other additives to prolong its shelf life.

Instead, it relies on small-batch production for the freshness of the ingredients, with an expiry date that applies from the moment it was created, as well as airless technology packaging – Quadpack’s Regula Airless.

The packaging design shields the formulation from external contamination, which means there is no need for synthetic preservatives. The product also endured a rigorous three-month testing process before it launched.

NUORI’s Brand Manager Ann-Marie Rønlund Jensen said the the brand’s new innovation took its concept to a new level.

"As a Scandinavian skincare brand, NUORI has always been about creating powerful formulas that take the hard work out of looking after your skin. We always combine several actions into one single product.

"For The One, we wanted to take this concept a step further and develop a daily moisturizer that would deliver multiple actions in one single super-layer. It targets dehydration, dullness, uneven skin tone, fine lines, and wrinkles. To put it short, this cream will nourish, regenerate, and protect your skin in one simple step thanks to its powerhouse formula."

The formula contains eight ingredients (Niacinamide, Ceramide, Bakuchiol, Peptides, Hyaluronic Acid, Vitamins C & E and Panthenol) and Jensen detailed the rationale behind the formulation.

"Through the years, we have received many questions from our customers on when to use a specific skincare product, what would be the correct order, and if different active ingredients can be combined. These questions are not only coming from skincare new-starters. Even aficionados who read a lot have been overwhelmed by the contradicting information found on the internet.

"We have therefore designed The One as an all-in-one formula, which reduces the risk of incorrect blending and layering of active ingredients at home. It’s a highly effective, yet safe complex of eight hero actives. These actives and their specific natural chemical forms have been chosen to complement each other. They have also been added to the formula in concentrations that are safe to use simultaneously, on a daily basis. The One simply takes the guesswork out of skincare."

Developing the formula took almost three years, and there were many trials and errors before the firm finally reached just the perfect combination of the actives.

"Finding the right ingredients in their natural variants also required extra time and effort from our development team. For example, in The One we have for the first time included peptides. With sustainability and animal welfare concerns in mind, we have previously blacklisted peptides as they are most commonly animal-derived. However, the search for the perfect plant-derived peptide was finally over when we found a unique pea peptide. These peptides are derived from organic green peas from farms located close to the ingredient manufacturing sites.

Packaging considerations

Packaging was also a key consideration, both in terms of protection and sustainability.

Jensen added: "We wanted the most sustainable pack with the highest protection. Our research and discussions led us to embrace recycled material, complete with its imperfections and colour variations. Airless was a given. The finished pack perfectly fits our mindset of high performance, simple aesthetics and low waste.

"Finding the right packaging was an easier process than developing the formulation, as we had been presented with Quadpack’s sustainable solution just over a year ago. All NUORI bottles had up until then been all-white in different recycled/recyclable materials such as sugarcane biopolymer, PP, and PET.

"However, when we were presented with this 100% recycled rPET solution for the outer bottle and cap, we fell in love with its greenish, grey colour, which reflects the recycled PET that had been collected, sorted, and processed. So instead of hiding the greenish tint of rPET, we wanted to celebrate the sustainable material by accentuating the colour with the green product colour."

Jensen stressed that all eight active ingredients ij the product can be used during pregnancy and do not cause photosensitivity.

"The fragrance of The One is fresh with green top notes, woody undertones and a hint of vanillin. For the first time, we have also included a 100%-natural fragrance blend that is completely free from the 26 fragrance allergens specified by the European Union for labelling. These are materials that are often considered the major fragrance allergens and must be identified so consumers who are sensitive to these materials have the knowledge needed to avoid products containing them."
