Late last month, the two companies announced signing an agreement to develop new beauty ingredient technologies together.

The partnership between Clariant and Plant Active Technologies (PAT) also means that Clariant will be the exclusive distributor of PAT’s personal care and cosmetic ingredients.

PAT is best known for its patent-pending so-called plant milking technology, which involves “stimulating” (creating wounds or openings in the roots of) plants grown in an aeroponic facility and collecting (or exudating) the liquid that oozes from the roots.

And now, in partnership with Clariant, the company will expand on that ingredient sourcing technology and other existing capabilities as well as work to develop more.

PAT and Clariant can do more for beauty together

The 2 companies are pooling their capabilities and expertise to develop new ingredient tech and to reach more brands and manufacturers. “We are delighted to join our forces with Clariant, one of the leading providers of active ingredients for the cosmetic industry,” Jean-Paul Fèvre, president of PAT tells the press.

“Thanks to their vision, expertise and knowledge,” he says, “we will bring together new outstanding possibilities to the cosmetic market in terms of naturality, innovation and performance."

While Hans Bohnen, a member of the executive committee at Clariant, sees the deal as a move toward a sustainable beauty industry: “We are excited to further improve our offer to the Personal Care market through this new investment that reflects Clariant’s on-going commitment to a more sustainable industry,” says Bohnen, adding that, “The partnership with PAT drives this commitment further and will provide to our customers with best choices in the field of Active Ingredients.”

Natural beauty ingredients that are uncontaminated and traceable

PAT’s technology makes natural / plant-based ingredients in a neatly contained sterile indoor environment, in much the same way that biotech companies like Mibelle and the formulation tech company Capsum do. This means that the ingredient maker has complete, consistent knowledge and control of what is in the ingredient, of how much and how often the ingredient is produced, and can offer customers a fully traceable ingredient supply information.

Christian Vang, global head of Clariant’s industrial and consumer care business unit, emphasizes this in his comments about the new partnership that, “The strategic partnership with PAT strengthens our capacity to serve customers with the most innovative and market-relevant active ingredients complementing our other partnerships and enhancing our portfolio with powerful, traceable and more sustainable offerings.”
