Azeilis, which is a leading global distributor of specialty chemicals, chose to secure the deal with Genomatica after it recognized keen interest in the product from formulators at major cosmetic and personal care brands.
The Azelis team is now conducting a market introduction programme for Brontide which will see its staff supporting scores of major customers.
Naturally sourced and sustainable
Butylene glycol is a colourless organic alcohol that is commonly used in a wide range of personal care formulations to lend increased moisture retention, improve texture and provide antmicrobial properties.
The big difference in Brontide butylene glycol is the sustainability profile. Instead of being directly produced from non-renewable crude oil, it is produced from renewable plant-based sugars.
This means the ingredient fulfills not only the important functionality of this type of ingredient, but also helps formulators and brands to meet the increasingly high bar that is being set by the sustainability profile of not just cosmetics and personal care products.
Ingredient launched in February this year
The ingredient was officially launched globally in February of this year as a branded product for the cosmetics and personal care industry, following several months of providing samples to the industry and getting strong feedback.

“We’re gratified by the recognition for our latest biotechnology-powered innovation,” said Christophe Schilling, CEO of Genomatica. “Our ability to harness the power of biology continues to grow, and with it we expect to deliver more high impact technologies for multiple products industry-wide.”
