L’Oréal hair care brand teams up with TerraCycle to reduce plastic packaging waste

For a second year, Garnier is running a recycling program on college campuses. The company has partnered with not only the TerraCycle recycling company but also with the social change organization DoSomething.org for this year’s initiative.

And, singer-songwriter, actor, and brand ambassador Mandy Moore is fronting the campaign. “I'm very passionate about taking care of our planet,” Moore tells the press. “Garnier's commitment to responsible beauty is one of the things that really excited me about the opportunity to serve as their brand ambassador.”

She goes on to explain why she appreciates the Garnier recycling initiative and it’s potential to promote long-term change. “I'm very proud to be a part of the Rinse, Recycle, Repeat campaign with DoSomething.org. I didn't grow up with the same knowledge that kids today have in terms of their global footprint and that's why I think it's great that Garnier is encouraging younger generations to become more aware of how to implement proper recycling habits at a young age to help take care of our planet and our future.”

DIY recycling

The program, directed at young women in college, has a goal of diverting 1 million empty plastic personal care and beauty packages from becoming landfill. In a PSA video Moore explains that containers marked 1 or 2 can be recycled through community curbside pickup. Consumers participating are asked to decorate a bathroom recycling bin and separate the community recyclables from those that need to be shipped off to TerraCycle.

TerraCycle specializes in hard-to-recycle materials and Garnier provides free shipping labels once consumers amass ten pounds or more of the packages and components that aren’t conventionally recyclable at the municipal level.

Conscious beauty

TerraCycle turns the material they receive into playground equipment, garden beds, benches, and the like. Participating students and campuses are eligible for scholarship money and a sponsored community garden, through a couple of competitions meant to incentivize recycling.

“We're excited to work with young people around the country to make a positive impact on the environment,” Aria Finger, CEO at DoSomething.org, say in a media release about this year’s recycling initiative. “We're proud to be working with Garnier, a brand that continuously demonstrates its commitment to sustainable beauty, to once again activate young people to give these products new purpose and to help them reach their goal of collecting 1 million empties in 2018.”
