Dow Corning launches new silicone-based film former
Dow Corning is launching its new film former for skin care and colour cosmetics applications having gathered data on the latest market trends and developing a product based on these needs.

The Dow Corning FC-5002 IDD Resin Gum is the latest launch from the ingredients supplier meeting consumers’ needs for an enhanced sensorial experience, as well as being versatile for formulators, says the company.

Film-formers have the ability to form a potentially long-lasting ‘second layer’ over the skin, which can present lots of opportunities for beauty care innovation.

The newly launched Dow Corning product is made of approximately 40% of Trimethylsiloxysilicate/Dimethiconol Crosspolymer dissolved in isododecane. After evaporation of the isododecane, the silicone polymer forms a film on skin.

Different approach

As a silicone film-former, the US-headquartered firm says that it enables a different approach as a range of ingredients can be chosen from, meaning it can be adapted for particular skin types and deliver various skin-care experiences.

“Silicone-based film formers are increasingly sought after for their lasting performance and comfort wear. They also continue to gain ground in the area of skin protection as you are aware,” Dirk Soontjens, Global skin care leader at Dow Corning, tells CosmeticsDesign-Europe.com.

“Dow Corning FC 5002 is one of those materials that are creatively designed by leading specialty chemicals suppliers… and is one of those technologies that has been adjusted for use in skin care applications. Innovation may come from adjacent consumer markets, such as packaging and healthcare in this case.”

Product specs

The company describes the new resin gum as a new type of film-former designed to form a highly flexible and breathable film with long-lasting properties, improved application comfort, good water repellency, and is available in different carriers.

For formulators, the advantages of using such a product are that multiple film-forming silicone technologies give greater versatility for formulating and in the manufacturing process, and also has good compatibility with common cosmetic ingredients, allowing easier incorporation in many product types.

From a consumer point-of-view, the use of non-occlusive materials preserves skin health and allows breathability whilst the variable film flexibility means more comfort when wearing the product.

High sebum and water repellency as well as high rub-off resistance properties also provide long-lasting benefits, according to Dow Corning.
