Oil based cosmetics driving high viscosity packaging innovation

The popularity of oil based cosmetics like Moroccan or Argan serums is creating demand for packaging that will be able to hold and dispense the thick formulations in a more efficient and sustainable way.

Packaging innovation is one of the driving forces behind brand development and suppliers have been working on 'high viscosity' packs that will efficiently contain and protect these formulations.

Viscosity is defined as a fluids resistance to flow, so high viscosity means an extreme resistance. It very generally describes a liquid that does not flow easily because it is 'sticky'; it sticks to itself essentially.

One company looking to cater to this trend is Global One-Pak which has developed a range specifically for oil-based formulations including skin care, hair, and sun care complete with a wide range of closures, actuator inserts and cap liners for mist sprayers, micro triggers and serum pumps.

According to GOP director Clive Broadbent; “The popularity of oils such as Macadamia in cosmetic and personal care products has led to a surge in demand for packs that can withstand these high viscosity formulations."

In the field of care, make-up and perfumes, metal, metallic appearances and sensoriality have many applications for caps and jar tops, cans, lids and additional covers, bottle and steper cladding and overmolding, lipstick mechanisms and rings, capsules, mascara wands.

Personal care packaging

The global flexible packaging segment is set to grow from $73,825.3 (€5,398.9) million in 2012 to $99,621.9 (€72,854.9) million by 2018 with a CAGR of 5.1% over the next five years.

The sector has also been forecasted by fellow market researcher Visiongain to record strong and sustained growth over the next decade as the economy continues to recover, supported by frequent innovation and sustainability.

"The European and North American markets are now very mature and saturated and the main way in which suppliers will seek to increase their sales and market share is through innovation,” say Visiongain analysts.

The use of biodegradable plastic in cosmetic packaging is increasing as more companies up their sustainability efforts and turn to injection-molded cases or packs for creams, gels and make-up.
