The specialised medium-density (MD) LDPE film grades are targeting packaging professionals looking to provide high clarity and stiffness that is typically found in collation shrink films.
The film is being manufactured at the company’s Wilton, Teeside facility, in the UK, where the company has invested in the construction of the world’s largest low-density polyethylene facility.
Purity and improved optical properties
The new range has been developed with features such as purity and improved optical properties, which is combined with high levels of machinability and cutting/punching performance, the company claims.
The film is the company’s first MD LDPE grade, and is planned to be a the first in a series of graded films ranging in a density of 928 to 935 g/cm 3.
“We are on track in our planned expansion of Teesside’s capabilities to offer European customers a portfolio of specialty materials for food packaging,” said Ben Raven, technical marketing engineer, SABIC.
“In addition to their high quality, attractive aesthetics and excellent processing characteristics, our new MD LDPE films promote sustainability in packaging.”
Films were tested out by SABIC customers
During the pre-commercialisation phase, the films were market tested by SABIC customers, who provided feedback that helped the development process.
The film is targeted at food and beverage products, such as multi-packs of bottles, but this could also serve for personal care applications.
Likewise, other MD LDPE film planned for the portfolio is likely to touch on a range of other personal care products, including hand tissues, wipes, and hygiene products.
