With the global fragrance market expected to reach $15.7 (€11.7) billion by 2017, natural ingredients are driving demand and are creating more opportunities for innovation.
In light of this Selena Wagstaff at fragrance giant, CPL Aromas says; “Look out for cardamom, ginger and leather, not just for women but for men as well.”
Tropically trending and a spicy influence
Tropical fruits like mango, nectarine and peach are also going to be favoured, particularly by young consumers and according to Wagstaff; the sporty, Olympic inspired theme is also set to continue throughout 2013.
Despite the move towards more tropical scents, there will also still be some dominance from sweet fragrances such as florals, both vintage and sweet.
“For spring/summer 2013, jasmine and orange blossom and sweet florals including heliotrope, violet and rose are all going to be popular,” Wagstaff predicts.
Meanwhile, Roz Wicks of Belmay Fragrances envisages ingredients like tropical nectars, and rich fruits such as blackcurrant, melon and pineapple being in demand come spring and summertime.
Agreeing with Wagstaff, Wicks says that sweet scents will hold their own in the area of ultra feminine and chic fragrances as the industry becomes inspired by couture fashion.
“Inspired, the fragrance world is responding with sparkling musks, pink champagne, strawberry flower, jasmine and hints of glamorous pink pepper.”
Ingredients of a more spicer nature are also being predicated, particularly for the male category with notes including black pepper, hot spices, cedar, cashmere wood and iris.
Packaging trends
The fragrance packaging sector is also predicting new trends of its own for 2013. Seram International, a company that specialises in textile transfers reveals silk, lace and floral textiles amongst this year’s biggest in terms of packaging design and accessories.
“Textile transfers are an innovative way for a brand to accessorize, embellish and enrich a fragrance product, and we are continuously updating our technology and materials to offer brands more choice,” she told CosmeticsDesign-Europe.com at a recent PCD event.
“The new trends for this year include silk materials, lace and flowers and European brands are opting for these accessories for the likes of prestigious perfumes, more so than other countries we supply to,” she further revealed.
Seram designs and manufactures more than 250 million accessories such as textile ornaments, bows, flowers, ribbons, tassels, jewels, hanging trims and embroideries for the European, US and Asian cosmetics markets.
