Colour cosmetics trends so far in 2012...
Last year saw the prestige beauty market generate high sales and double digit growth, with particular thanks to the make-up category. In light of this, Cosmetics Design takes a look at what's been trending in the colour cosmetics sector so far in 2012....

More companies moving into colour cosmetics

Earlier in the month, Lush announced it was moving into colour cosmetics for the first time with a new make-up concept, Emotional Brilliance.

According to the global cosmetics player, the range spent two years in development and has been created to match the psychological needs of the consumer choosing which colour they desire.

This range – consisting of lip colours, eyeliners and eyeshadows – is less about wearing make-up that’s in-season or on-trend and more about wearing colours that shape your mood.”

Trending

In March, packaging firm Albéa launched its latest packs for face make-up with a focus on compacts and applicators.

Its Handle puff is claimed to be the first sponge applicator with a handle ideal for face makeup, and is designed to ensure the sponge remains suitable for multiple use, and so that the product is evenly spread.

Meanwhile, cosmetics giant Shiseido launched a brand new mascara onto the market featuring camellia oil to provide moisture to the lashes.

According to a company spokesperson, “Perfect Mascara Full Definition acts as a dual-textured brush, coating every lash while the firm tip captures tiny lashes to add volume, separation and length while lasting up to 16 hours.”

Innovation

In April, Japanese based company Fuji-Sangyo announced it had come up with a formulation featuring mulberry root extract to promote eyelash growth.

The tonic is said to be particularly special as the company says the mulberry extract has been a reputed ingredient used in scalp hair growth tonics and skin whitening products for years but had yet to be applied to the lash area.

The root for the eyelash tonic is obtained through a different extraction process than that used for skin whitening purposes to achieve an effect of recovering the hair cycle."

Last month, Taiki Group claimed it has solved the largest safety concern women have in make-up application – the eyes - with ‘EcoG+’, an application that contains an antimicrobial resin said to eliminate preservatives in mascara formulas.

According to the international cosmetics application supplier, the development is the first on the market to provide complete protection of mascara products, 'The package provides preservative protection, and the silica allows for a 40 per cent - 70 per cent reduction in use of petrochemical resins.'
