Probiotics are making a strong showing in personal care products to control acne, signs of ageing, immune functions and topical benefits for skin care products.

These probiotics are most widely accepted by medical practitioners and consumers in Europe.

One of the first ingredients launched for treating skin conditions was Bioecolia, alpha glucan oligosaccharide, obtained from natural sugars. Bioecolai from Solabia targets the undesirable flora on the skin and promotes beneficial cutaneous strains.

Solabia also features Ecoskin, a pre/probiotic complex, spray dried on maltodextrin,

composed of α-glucooligosaccharides and obtained by enzymatic synthesis from vegetal substrates (corn maltose, beetroot saccharose).

Ecoskin contains lactobacillus probiotic bacteria to helps balance the beneficial flora of the skin during times of stress and exposure to airborne bacteria.

Formulas restore the balance

Probiotics are a more holistic way of treating health conditions including those affecting the skin.

Probiotics help restore the balance of the beneficial bacteria to assist in the renewal of the skin. This is different than the conventional antibiotics or antibacterial agents that destroy harmful and beneficial bacteria.

Oragenics developed Evora a brand or oral hygene products that supports gum and tooth health.

The active ingredient in EvoraPro, called ProBiora3, contains a proprietary blend of three select oral bacterial strains of human origin: Streptococcus oralis strain KJ3, Streptococcus uberis strain KJ2 for maintaining gingival health and Streptococcus rattus strain JH145 for maintaining dental health.

All three strains are from the generally non-pathogenic group of bacteria known as Streptococcus viridians.

Probiotics contribute to healthy skin

Probiotics contribute to an increase of the ‘good’ bacteria, which can help to minimise or even neutralise the effects of bacteria that are considered hostile or detrimental to health.

Good bacteria can also help to inhibit the growth of disease producing bacteria as well as aid in the synthesis of vitamins, improve the uptake of minerals and stimulate the immune system.

Since the skin is a reflection of inner health, it’s not surprising that if you suffer from digestive disturbances, your complexion may become sensitive, appear unhealthy, discolored, mottled and pasty.

Researchers have shown that conditions including sensitive and acneic skin can also be improved.

A natural source of good-for-you bacteria

These probiotics shields against the daily effects of environmental stress and provide competitive protection against harmful bacteria. These harmful bacterias often creates skin conditions like acne, rosacea, psoriasis, milia, rashes and dermatitis.

Additionally, probiotics are said to improve skin barrier function and deter premature formation of wrinkles.
