P&G extends Clairol hair color recall

Procter and Gamble has added two more shades to the voluntary recall list of its Clairol Natural Instincts products, taking the total number of shades recalled from the market up to 12.

P&G recalled ten shades of its hair coloring products last week, stating that some of the kits may produce an unwanted color result.

The company said in a statement that a very small number of the two additional products, which will be pulled from sale in the US, Canada and Puerto Rico, are affected.

The two additional shades are:

  • Natural Instincts 11G Lightest Golden Brown (Amber Shimmer)
  • Natural Instincts Vibrant Shade 6A Light Cool Brown (Wake-up Cocoa)

As with the previous recall, P&G says it is taking the step due to a mismatched ColorFresh! Revitalizer sachet in the kits that may create the unwanted coloring.

Only secondary coloring agent is affected

P&G has assured consumers that all of the products in the kit remain safe to use, it is only the Revitalizer coloring, which is administered two weeks after initial coloring that has been affected. Meanwhile, the company has reconfirmed that the primary hair colorant is not affected.

P&G is removing the products in question from store shelves and has informed regulatory authorities in the affected countries.

Consumers with one of the impacted sachets have been told they can still use everything else in the kit, including the main colorant and color conditioning treatment, but should discard the ColorFresh! Revitalizer sachet.

Clairol has stated that it expects the affected shades and products to be back on shelves in May 2011.
