Symrise expands Extrapone grains-based skin care collection

Flavours and ingredients giant Symrise has expanded its collection of Extrapone Botanical grain extracts with eight new ingredients in response to growing demand.

The Germany-based company says the expansion of its ‘healthy’ grains collection now brings the total number of grains in the portfolio to 11 - bringing together a collection that is mainly aimed at skin care, but also for hair care formulations.

“Building on the success of our existing grains range, we have spent a significant amount of time researching and developing these new products with extensive functional properties,” said Bernhard Kott, vice president of marketing at Symrise.

“Obviously the success of this range of ingredients has been triggered by huge demand for natural-based formulations, in turn tapping into the industry trend for natural and organic products.”

The 'forgotten' grains

The extension to the range highlights what the company terms the ‘forgotten’ supergrains, building on the existing range which includes wheat, white rice and oat.

Those supergrains include extracts of amaranth, quinoa and Khorasan – ancient grains that are all currently enjoying a renaissance in the cosmetics and personal care category initially triggered by the food industry.

For personal care and cosmetic formulation, the essential element of any grain is the nutrient-rich kernel, which contains extracts known for their nurturing, skin rejuvenating and elasticity-enhancing qualities.

Together with the amaranth, quinoa and Khorasan extracts, Symrise is also introducing black rice, millet, barley, rye and spelt to the Extrapone Botanical healthy grains portfolio.

Adaptable to a range of applications

Symrise has developed a range of applications for the new grains and claims the range is suited to almost any type of product, including facial, eye and hand care products, cleansers, shower, gels, shampoo and hair styling products.

All the extracts are also water soluble, adding to formulation flexibility, while the entire portfolio is available on a global basis.

According to Kott, the Symrise R&D team is currently working with a number of other grains, which could easily mean the range will be further expanded in the future.
