The Ecocert-approved StimulHyal is a high-purity calcium 2-ketogluconate obtained by bioconversion of a carbohydrate.
According to Soliance, the ingredient stimulates the synthesis of hyaluronic acid and elastin in the skin, resulting in increased skin elasticity and a decrease in skin fatigue.
This contributes to improved skin appearance as it helps to prevent the skin from sagging and the formation of smile lines.
Clinical trials
The company reported that in vitro tests showed Stimulhyal to increase elastin synthesis by 39.7 per cent using a concentration of 10/pg/ml, and 44.6 per cent using a concentration of 100pg/ml.
Similarly, hyaluronic acid synthesis increased by 36.3 per cent using a Stimulhyal concentration of 100pg/ml and by 92.7 per cent using a concentration of 1000pg/ml.
In vivo tests were conducted on 22 volunteers where a cream formulated with 0.5 per cent of Stimulhyal was applied twice a day for 28 days and the effects measured against a placebo.
Cutaneous fatigue was found to decrease by 27 per cent and skin elasticity increased by 16 per cent, the company claims.
Cosmetics applications
The company says that Stimulhyal (which is recommended to be used at a concentration of between 0.3 and 0.5 per cent) is suitable for use in a variety of cosmetics applications.
For anti-ageing products, the ingredient is claimed to tone up the skin and smooth out wrinkles. It is also suitable for use in lip care and hand care products, the company says.
Additionally, it can also be used in body contouring and sculpting applications, due to its ability to increase skin elasticity.
Soliance will be showcasing Stimulhyal and other ingredients at the upcoming in-cosmetics show in Paris on April 13-15.
