Germany-based ingredients provider Symrise has launched a new high technology active ingredient aimed at soothing sensitive skin problems.

The company’s latest launch is SymSitive 1609, a formulation designed to tackle dermal irritations caused by environmental factors, stress, fatigue and allergies.

The company says that it developed the formulation because of increasing demand, especially given that now it is estimated that in Europe, the US and Japan 50 per cent of women and 36 per cent of men suffer from some form of dermal irritation.

Likewise, Symrise also points out that in China, currently one of the world’s fastest growing markets for skin care products, an estimated 36 per cent of the entire population are said to be afflicted by dermal irritation.

Dermal reactions are invariably neurological

Symrise says its approach to the development of the new formulation was based around the fact that dermal reactions are invariably a neurological symptom.

Focusing on this, the company said it identified two key factors in the physiological mechanism that exacerbate dermal reactions: increased permeability of the skin's upper layer - the stratum corneum, and hyper reactivity of the peripheral nervous system.

Symrise says its research work for the formulation concentrated on the two specific sensations of burning and stinging, which are common symptoms with dermal irritations.

According to Symrise’s head of cosmetics ingredients, Dr. Joachim Roding, the ingredient “minimises hypersensitivity reactions and the peripheral nervous system while simultaneously targeting certain receptors in the skin.”

Targeting the sensitivity threshold

Likewise, the formulation also acts to prevent sensitivity by increasing the skin’s ‘sensitivity threshold’.

The company says clinical trials on 20 subjects showed that capsaicin-induced stinging and burning was diminished below the recognised threshold immediately after the formulation was applied.

Back in September the company launched a deodorant formulation specially designed for sensitive skins as well as being more environmentally friendly, called SymDeo B125.
