Clariant unveils green labeling for the cosmetics industry

Specialty chemicals player Clariant has announced EcoTain labeling, which it claims will help the industry create greener formulations.

The company says the label initiative represents eco-friendly, economical and sustainable characteristics – three concepts that are of vital importance to everyone in the industry given both the economic climate and consumer demands for eco-friendly products.

To attain an EcoTain label the company says that any chemical it supplies to the personal care industry has to be naturally derived, APEO- and EO-free, as well as being of low toxicity.

The company says that it has been able to meet formulators budgetary constraints because the chemicals it supplies with these labels are more efficient to process, which means less waste and lower production costs, without compromising quality or efficacy.

Lower energy costs and emissions

Likewise, on top of the cost savings, the easier processing also mean lower energy processing costs, which in turn means less emissions potential, and a lower environmental impact.

The EcoTain personal care formulations are also based on sustainable raw materials from renewable sources, that also comply with environmental, safety and health standards, the company claims.

Currently the company has a number of EcoTain products and services already available in its product portfolio, including emulsifier and emulsifier blends such as Hostacerin SFO, a sunflower-based ingredient for a variety of skin care products.

Greening up formulation concepts

The range also includes emollient esters with Velsan CCT, surfactants and blends such as Hostapon and Medialan, together with formulation concepts such as Hostapur SAS 60 for shampoos and shower gels, together with rinse-off products such as Genagen KB that are EO-free.

As well as serving to help its consumers formulate more eco-friendly products, the company says that the labeling initiative also underlines its own drive towards producing naturally derived products that are from sustainable resources.

“Consumers are showing a high level of interest in natural cosmetics, associating green cosmetics not merely with the origin of the product but also with health and well-being implications, the manufacturing processes used, and an increasing concern for sustainable development,”​ said Elmar Bush global business director for Clariant’s personal care division.
