Cincinnati-based Ingenuity Products claims it is filling one of the
biggest voids in the cosmetics market with the launch of its Skin
Shield Wand - a cream designed to tackle the problem of undesirable
hair dye residue around the hair line.

And it's a significant problem. According to Ingenuity Products, approximately 42 per cent of hair color users say that they have inadvertently stained their hair line, a tell-tail sign for individuals aspiring to the more natural look.

The company's answer to this problem is Repelle, a product that underlines fifty years of hair care improvements without the introduction of a product that tackles this specific problem.

The Skin Shield Wand is said to provide an invisible barrier to protect the skin from harsh chemicals, while maintaining its cleanliness and softness.

It comes in the form of a cream based on shea butter, which provides moisturizing and ultra hydrating properties, which contains anti-oxidant Vitamin E to fight free radicals and help protect the skin the skin from the oxidative effects of dye.

It also contains aloe vera, known for its high mineral and vitamin content, as well as its healing properties, together with Pretectin-22, a derivative of rapeseed oil, that is said to ionically repel positively charged hair color dyes.

The product, which markets for around $5, is applied around any region where hair dye is about to be applied, including the forehead, around the eyebrows, mustache and the back of the neck.

Likewise, it can then be simply wiped off after the hair dye process has been completed.

With 54 per cent of US women currently dying their hair and such a significant proportion reporting the problem of hair line dye, this type of product could find a strong niche, particularly as so many niche products in the hair care market have helped to drive growth in the sector in recent years.

Industry analysts refer to the proliferation of such niche products in the hair care market as the micro-segmentation of the market.
